August 14th, 2020
The TCH Family of Businesses has finalized a deal to acquire the assets of Sell Hardware. Based in Duluth, MN, Sell Hardware has a long history as an industry leader servicing architects, contractors and end users in the Northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Upper Michigan markets. Sell Hardware was established in 1962 in the basement of an East Duluth retail hardware store under the leadership of Albert Sell. Albert’s son Don, began his career working in the fabrication shop and lock shop until moving into the office in 1978. Don acquired the business in 1990 and has continued to operate and maintain the reputation for quality service of doors, frames, and architectural products for the last 30 years.
TCH and Sell Hardware had begun discussions in late 2019 to help provide future succession for the company. “After over 42 years in the business and thinking of a succession plan, I wanted to find a company that would continue the legacy that my father and I have created around Sell Hardware for the incredible team we have here at Sell Hardware and the great customers we have had the pleasure of serving over the many years,” says Don Sell, Owner of Sell Hardware.
“Don has very similar company values that mirror TCH leadership. This creates a great cultural fit within our organization that will allow for a seamless transition,” says Ben Boomer, President of TCH. The strategic location in northern MN, also give TCH a great stocking distribution point that will complement our Fargo, ND location to allow us to better serve our smaller market customers in our home market of the Upper Midwest.
“Our strategic growth plan not only includes acquisitions with companies that have strong capabilities with new security technologies, as was the case with Access Technologies in Albuquerque, NM, but also organic and strategic acquisitions within our core competency of the Door and Hardware industry. TCH will be able to bolster Sell Hardware with our extensive expanded inventory and production capabilities as well as our additional services with networked security technologies and national footprint,” says Ben Boomer.
Don Sell will stay on with TCH to help with a smooth transition and continue to run the Branch operation in Duluth. TCH is committed to hiring and supporting the local economy in Duluth while expanding our capabilities and support for the region.
TCH is a veteran owned small business specializing in door, hardware, and security distribution.
